In this survey, public opinion was sought on the issue of giving Hasina a shelter from India. Hasina took refuge in India after the rebellion in Bangladesh in July.

21.1 percent of the people in the survey believe that India should extradite Hasina in Bangladesh to improve relations with the present government in Dhaka. At the same time, 29.1 percent people believe that Hasina should be transferred to another country instead of living in India.

North Eastern states contribute to survey
Support for extradition of Hasina is the strongest in the northeastern states sharing border with Bangladesh. 55 percent of the people of this region said that Hasina should be sent back to Bangladesh. Also, 16 percent of the people believe that they should be sent to a third country to protect them from legal action, while 23 per cent believe that they should be allowed to stay in India in view of their long alliance with India. .

Hasina’s support for living in India
At the national level, 37.6 percent of the people say that Sheikh Hasina has been a strong ally in India and should be given shelter in India as a symbol of loyalty. This support is being seen from Hasina as a recognition of long -term relations and cooperation with India.

Hasina’s shelter in India and Bangladesh’s response
On August 5, Hasina fled to India with her sister Sheikh Rehana amid protests led by students. She is facing more than 100 legal matters in Bangladesh, including murder, mass murders and crimes against humanity. On 23 December, Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry requested the Government of India to formally return Hasina, but India has not yet reacted to it.

Special response to the northeastern states
The survey also found that the people of Northeast India have more inclination towards the extradition of Hasina. The region has widespread support for their extradition, which highlights the sensitivity of diplomatic relations between India and Bangladesh.
