China on Friday (August 8, 2025) to attend the Tianjin Summit of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to be held later this month Narendra Modi Welcoming a possible visit to Friday (August 8, 2025). He hoped that the event would be a meeting of solidarity, friendship and meaningful results.
People who have knowledge about the case in Delhi said this week that after a gap of seven years, Prime Minister Modi can visit China to attend the SCO’s annual summit later this month.
SCO summit will be held from 31 August to 1 September
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said, “China welcomes Prime Minister Modi for the SCO’s Tianjin Summit.” He was asked about the news of Modi’s visit to China to attend the summit. China will host the SCO Summit in Tianjin from 31 August to 1 September.
He said, “We believe that the combined effort of all parties will have a confluence of solidarity, friendship and meaningful consequences and SCO will enter a new phase of high quality development with more solidarity, coordination, mobility and productivity.”

Guo said, “Leaders of more than 20 countries, including all member countries of SCO and 10 international organizations, will participate in the relevant programs. SCO Tianjin Summit will be the biggest summit since the establishment of SCO.”
Modi is expected to visit Japan around August 29. After this, he can go to the Chinese city of Tianjin for the SCO summit. There is no official confirmation of Modi’s visit to Japan and China to two countries yet.
The meeting between PM Modi and President Jinping is not clear
China is the current president of SCO. In such a situation, India’s Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval had gone to China to participate in SCO meetings in the last two months. However, it is not yet clear whether Prime Minister Modi and President Jinping will hold a bilateral meeting during the SCO Summit or not. It is expected that Russian President Vladimir Putin will attend the top leaders participating in the SCO Summit.
PM Modi went to China in 2018 last time
Prime Minister Modi last came to China to attend the SCO summit in June 2018. At the same time, Chinese President Xi Jinping went to India for the second informal summit in October 2019. However, in eastern Ladakh, there was a tussle between the two countries due to deadlock on the border. The military deadlock in eastern Ladakh began in May 2020 and in June the same year, there was a serious tension in the relationship in the Galwan Valley.
In 2024, Modi-Jinping met in Kazan, Russia
The deadlock was effectively ended after the process of returning soldiers from the last two conflict points of Demchok and Depsang under the agreement on 21 October last year. It was decided to resume various dialogues in a meeting between Prime Minister Modi and President Jinping on 23 October 2024 in Kazan, Russia.
This meeting of Modi-shee was held between India and China two days after the agreement to withdraw soldiers from Depsang and Demchok. The two sides took several initiatives to reinforce the relationship, including to resume the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and re -start tourist visas to Chinese citizens from New Delhi. The two sides are also discussing the methods of resumption of direct flight services between the two countries.

Iran joined the group in 2023 and Belarus in 2024.
