Who is Manikarnika Dutta, being asked to leave Britain due to research in India

Manikarnika Dutta, a former student and researcher at the famous historian, Oxford University, never thought that she would have to struggle so much to live in that country that she had been considering her home for decades. 37 -year -old Assistant Professor Manikarnika Dutta is facing exile at University College Dublin.

According to a report by The Guardian, Manikarnika Dutta applied for indefinite living (ILR) on the basis of being more than 10 years in Britain but according to the rules, the applicant should not stay out of Britain for more than 548 days. Manikarnika Dutta stayed in India for 691 days so her application was rejected.

Warning of leaving Britain Dutta expressed surprise at this decision of Britain’s home office. He said, ‘When I got an e-mail that I have to leave Britain, I was shocked. I have been living here for 12 years and I have worked in various universities’. Dutta said, ‘I came here to do Masters in Oxford and a large part of my life is spent here. Manikarnika Dutta applied for (ILR) with her husband Dr. Sauvik Naha in October last year. Sauvik Naha is a senior lecturer of colonial history at Glasgow University. The two have been living together in London for 10 years. Dr. Naha’s application in Britain was accepted but his wife was rejected. Dutta demanded a review of this decision but the home office remained on its decision. Dutta came to Britain on a student visa in 2012 and later got her husband’s visa as a dependent on her husband’s global talent visa.

Manikarnika Dutta has decided for a legal battle against the decision of Britain’s home office. His lawyer Naga Kandia warned, ‘This case can harm the credibility of Britain. If Britain wants to make itself a global leader in educational and innovation, then he will have to create an atmosphere welcoming for talented people. Such decisions can deprive the university from PhD researchers in which years have been invested ‘.
