A strange scene in the desert of Saudi Arabia has caught the attention of people from all over the world. The European Space Agency (ESA) Copernicus Sentinel-1 satellite has shared pictures of round and bright colored structures spread in the barren desert of Northern Saudi Arabia. On seeing above, these structures looked very mysterious, which started speculation and debate.
However, later analysis made it clear that these are not a natural change but man -made agricultural structures. These fields are part of the modern agricultural technology of the Saudi government, through which the desert is being converted into fertile land.
Radar image revealed change
These structures were studied by Copernicus Sentinel-1 from photos taken in October 2024, January 2025 and May 2025. With radar technology, it became clear how the land has been changed for farming in these areas.
Where are these fields?
These Gol Rings are pictures of irrigation areas in the Wadi As Sirhan Basin located near Tabarajal city. Every goal farm is about one kilometer wide. There is a well in the middle of every farm, which draws water from underground waterlogged. There are long sprinkler around the well, which distributes water evenly throughout the field while walking. This is why the size of the field is completely round. This system is built according to the climate of Saudi Arabia, where the rainfall is very low. Despite the difficult climate of Saudi Arabia in these fields, wheat, alfalfa and vegetables are being cultivated. All this has been possible due to the strategies of efficient water management.
What showed in satellite photos?
The satellite photographs shared by ESA have seen white, gray and black areas around the fields, which reflect either naked land, desert sand or farm without vegetable.
Role of Tabarajal city
Tabarajal has become a major agricultural center of Saudi Arabia. The city is a source of food supply for the surrounding rural areas and plays an important role in the food security of Northern Saudi Arabia.
